Periodontal approach on handicapped aged patient
Lee Jae-Mok

Abstract
Public concern has not been interested mentally and/or physically handicapped persons or the elderly with respect to
dental issues including oral health and periodontal diseases and with increasing life expectancy, older age groups with
mental and physical disabilities require great attention. Among various exacerbating factors of periodontal disease, the
main cause is large amount of plaque which, with continuous deposition, may complicate the problem in older patients
with disabilities. A dentist needs accurate comprehension on the progression of periodontal disease in patients with
disabilities since this patient group requires special care. Especially, a disabled patient reacts differently from normal
patients due to impaired communication and physical disabilities. If the dentist does not understand his or her response,
the patient might suffer discomfort and feel resistant to the treatment. It may agitate the patient and give rise to specific
phobias which in turn would start a vicious cycle. To minimize the complication, the dentist must be aware of the general
conditions of the disorder and check the patient¡¯s specific information.
